Fact is, many greats companies like Apple, Hewlett-Packard, and Microsoft were started during the recession. [...]

Economic downturn is not entirely a loss phase. It can be turned into an opportunity by a skilled strategic thinking entrepreneurs. One of the best companies which had successfully faced recession is Google. Lots of Asian countries like China had indeed grown during the current recession. Entrepreneurs need to be analytic as well as bold in their initiatives to weather the storm.

Like you said, launching a startup in a down economy is challenging. In the investors’ perspective, those who start a business in a recession are likely someone who are determined and dedicated (unlike those who are in it for a quick buck during an economic boom). This is why seasoned investors are keen to invest during downturn.

Entrepreneurship during economic downturn has always been a challenging task for the startups who must engage themselves in researches with a view to experiencing real knowledge of their time and aspirations of the existing market and changes developed among the customers in evaluating their necessity and demand. They will always find a ‘Market’ despite constraints built up due to recession for a period, short or long. Young entrepreneurs should learn from the glorious history created by Atari, Apple, Oracle, Hewlett-Packard and Microsoft who have thrived against the unfavorable swing of the market and established as titans in the global industries. Days of surefire will have to be achieved and before that great tolerance for risk should be embedded on the matrix of their disposition.
